How to Extend Your UAE Visit Visa Without Leaving the Country

Yes. Many UAE visit and tourist visas can be extended without leaving the country, as long as the visa itself is eligible and the application is filed before the permitted stay ends. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) says a visit or tourism entry permit may be extended once or more than once, provided the total duration does not exceed 120 days. A visa issued to visit a relative or friend may be extended up to a total of 180 days. If the visa was issued in Dubai, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA Dubai) handles the extension, and its tourist-visa service uses the same 120-day ceiling. Some short visas cannot be extended at all. The sponsor, or the tourism office that issued the visa, files the request. This is guidance from those published rules, reviewed on 3 October 2026, not a guarantee that every file will be approved.

What an in-country UAE visit visa extension means
An in-country extension lets a visitor stay in the United Arab Emirates after the original permission ends, without making an exit and a new entry. People also call it a visa extension without exit, a visa renewal inside the UAE, or an inside-the-country extension. It is not a residence visa, and it does not by itself create a right to work.
The original entry permit still matters. Immigration looks at who issued the visa, which emirate it belongs to, whether it is single entry or multiple entry, and whether you are already inside the UAE. A tourist visa arranged by an accredited Dubai tourism office is a different file from a visa sponsored by a relative in Abu Dhabi or Sharjah. Using the wrong portal is the most common reason an online application stalls.
If you still need a visa before you travel, start with a fresh application on the UAE visa page. An extension is only for a visa that has already been issued and used. If the trip is urgent and a new entry permit is the right product, the express visa service is the path to compare, not an extension of a visa you do not hold yet.
Read the visa before you assume it can be extended
Open the entry permit or the visa approval and write down four facts. First, the issuing authority: GDRFA Dubai, ICP, or another emirate. Second, the visa name: tourist, visit a relative or friend, visa on arrival, business visit, or something narrower. Third, the last day you are allowed to stay. Fourth, the sponsor name. That sponsor is usually the party that must submit the extension.
GDRFA Dubai’s service for extending a tourist visa says the visa may be extended by a decision of the issuing authority, one or more times, for a total that does not exceed 120 days. The same department’s page for extending a friend or relative visit visa uses a 180-day total. ICP publishes the same split: tourism and visit permits up to 120 days in total, and a relative or friend permit up to 180 days in total. “In total” means the original stay plus every extension, not 120 extra days on top of an already long visa.
Older FAQ pages on some government sites still say certain leisure visas are “not extendable” and then describe extension periods in the next sentence. When a service page and an FAQ disagree, use the live service page for your exact visa and ask the sponsor to confirm the file. Do not book a non-refundable extra month of hotels until the extension is approved.
Dubai visas and visas issued in other emirates
Use GDRFA Dubai when the visa was issued in Dubai. The practical channels are the GDRFA smart services, with UAE Pass or a username, and Amer service centres during their opening hours. GDRFA lists an expected completion time of 48 hours for the tourist visa extension and for the friend or relative visit visa extension. Only accredited tourism offices in Dubai can issue the tourist visa that this extension service covers, so a visitor usually cannot open a brand-new tourist file alone from a hotel room.
Use ICP when the visa was issued through the federal system, which is the usual route for visas outside the Dubai GDRFA file. ICP’s Visa Extension service asks for the passport, a personal photo, and the same documents that were submitted when the visa was first issued. ICP lists a service completion duration of about two days. Apply on the ICP smart channel that matches the original file. A Dubai GDRFA application will not move an ICP file, and the reverse is also true.
If you are unsure which logo is on your approval, send the visa to the company that arranged it before you pay any fee. Contact Kite Star Tourism if this office issued the visa. If another sponsor issued it, that sponsor has to file. Kite Star can still explain the difference, but it cannot replace another sponsor’s login.
How long you can stay after an extension
There is no single number of extra days for every passport. The published ceilings are the useful limits:
Tourist or visit entry permit: extensions are possible once or more than once, and the total duration must not exceed 120 days, according to ICP and GDRFA Dubai’s tourist extension service.
Visit a relative or friend: the issuing authority may extend the visa once or more than once, and the total must not exceed 180 days.
Each approved extension is often for the same period as the visa you already hold, but the officer can grant a shorter period. GDRFA’s tourist service says the extension is for the same period, for one or more trips.
A 30-day tourist visa and a 60-day tourist visa therefore do not produce the same calendar result, even when both are eligible. Add the days you have already spent in the UAE before you ask for more. If you are already close to 120 days on a tourist permit, a further extension can be refused because the ceiling has been reached, not because the form was filled in wrongly.
Multiple-entry visas need an extra check. The right to enter more than once is not the same as the right to extend a stay. Read the conditions on the approval. If the visa is multiple entry but the stay per visit is short, the extension service still depends on the issuing authority.
Visit visas that usually cannot be extended inside the UAE
ICP states that some entry permits are not extendable. Entry permits for border areas, truck drivers, workers on tourist ships, and pleasure boats are in that group. A 60-day visa issued to nationals of certain countries who live outside their country of nationality is also listed as not extendable. A 14-day visa in that same situation may be extended once, for the same period, and ICP lists a separate fee for that case.
GDRFA also publishes a narrow service for extending a visa on arrival for some Indian nationals who hold a valid US visa, US Green Card, UK residence visa, or a residence visa from a European Union country, with a 14-day stay from approval. That is not a general visa-on-arrival extension for every nationality. If your passport is not in that rule, do not rely on it.
A visa that cannot be extended still has a clean exit. Leave on or before the last permitted day, then apply for a new entry if you need to come back. Search flights early enough to leave without an overstay, and use the visa application if a new tourist permit is required for the return. For a very short urgent re-entry, compare that with the express Dubai visa only after you know an extension is impossible.
Who is allowed to submit the extension
The visitor is not always the applicant. On a tourist visa issued by a tourism company, that company is the sponsor and files the extension through its immigration channel. On a visa sponsored by a resident relative or friend, that sponsor files. GDRFA’s inside-the-country fees are written as fees for “the sponsored person” who is already in the UAE, which is another way of saying the file is a sponsored file.
Have the passport copy ready, and keep the original passport with you. Do not post the original passport to a third party you have not instructed. If Kite Star Tourism issued your visa, the visa desk needs the passport copy, the current approval, and the dates you want to add. You can also track a visa application when the case is a new application rather than an extension of an existing stay.
Typing centres and Amer centres can submit Dubai applications during working hours. The online channel is available all day. Either way, the application should be in the system before the stay expires. “We sent a WhatsApp on the last evening” is not the same as a filed and paid application.
Documents to prepare
ICP’s published list for a visa extension is short, and then it points back to the original file:
Passport.
Personal photo.
The same documents that were submitted when the visa was issued, according to the visa type.
GDRFA’s tourist extension and its friend-or-relative extension both list a passport copy as the requirement on the service page. In practice the officer can ask for anything that was required the first time: a host’s Emirates ID and passport for a family visit, a hotel booking, a return ticket, or proof of funds. If your situation has changed, say so before the fee is paid. A passport that now has fewer than six months of validity can block a file even when the visa type is extendable.
Keep a scan of the entry stamp or the online entry record as well. The extension is about time inside the country, so the day you entered matters as much as the day printed on the visa.
Fees published for an extension inside the UAE
Pay the fee shown on the official checkout for your file. The figures below are the components published by ICP and GDRFA Dubai as of 3 October 2026. GDRFA states that the total can change because of the visitor’s circumstances. Do not treat a blog total as the amount on your receipt.
Item | ICP visa extension | GDRFA Dubai, person inside the UAE |
|---|---|---|
Application or extension fee | AED 100 application fee, plus AED 500 to extend the entry | AED 600 visa extension fee, plus 5% VAT |
Inside-the-country extras | Not listed as a separate inside-country bundle on the ICP service page | AED 500 inside-the-country fee, AED 10 Knowledge Dirham, AED 10 Innovation Dirham |
Shorter special cases Get a Free Visa ConsultationStill have questions about your Dubai visa? Our Dubai visa experts are here to help. Get a free consultation and clear guidance today. | AED 250 to extend certain 14-day visas once, for the same period | Visa-on-arrival extension is limited to the nationalities and residence documents named on that service |
Before you fly | AED 50 if you only need the entry permit’s validity extended before arrival. That is not an in-country stay extension | Not the same service as an inside-the-country extension |
Time | About 2 days | About 48 hours |
Knowledge and Innovation dirhams are small government charges. The inside-the-country fee is the line that surprises people, because it applies when the sponsored person is already in the UAE. Add VAT only where the service page says VAT applies. A typing centre or Amer centre may add its own service charge on top of the government lines. Ask for that charge before you sit down.
Kite Star Tourism’s documentation or service fee, if you ask this office to file a visa it issued, is separate from the government lines above. It is quoted on your file. It is not a substitute for the ICP or GDRFA payment.
How to extend the visa without leaving the UAE
Confirm eligibility five to seven days before the stay ends. Check the issuing authority, the sponsor, and the 120-day or 180-day ceiling. If you are already near the ceiling, plan an exit instead of an extension.
Tell the sponsor. If Kite Star Tourism issued the visa, contact the visa desk with the passport copy and the approval. If a relative sponsored you, that relative submits the request.
File on the matching channel. GDRFA smart services or an Amer centre for a Dubai visa. ICP smart services for a federal visa. Upload the passport copy and any document that was required the first time.
Pay the fee shown for your file. Save the receipt. A screenshot of a chat is not a payment.
Wait for the decision. Plan for about 48 hours, and do not assume approval because the payment went through.
Save the new approval with your passport. The extra days should be visible on the updated permit. If you later need to show status to a hotel or an airline, that approval is the document that matters.
While you wait, do not let the original stay expire. If the last day is tomorrow and the sponsor has not filed, the safe move is to leave, not to hope the application will be backdated.
Overstay fines if the extension is late
ICP lists a fine of AED 50 for each day the stay goes past the permitted period or the entry visa expires. That fine is a penalty. It is not an extension, and paying it does not give you a new visa. The fine can increase the longer the overstay runs, and a later departure can be stopped until the amount is settled.
Some visas show a grace period on the approval or in the immigration file. Do not borrow a grace period from another person’s visa or from an old social-media post. If your file does not show one, treat the printed last day as the last day. File the extension while the stay is still valid so you are not paying an overstay fine and an extension fee for the same week.
If you have already overstayed, contact the issuing authority or the sponsor before you go to the airport. Bring the passport and the receipt for any fine you pay. Kite Star’s Dubai office can tell you what this company can still file, and what has to be done directly with ICP or GDRFA.
When an extension is refused
A refusal is a decision on that file. Common reasons are a visa type that cannot be extended, a total stay that would pass 120 or 180 days, a passport that is too short, a sponsor who will not file, or a document that no longer matches the original application. None of those is fixed by submitting the same form again on the same day without a change.
If the refusal arrives while you are still inside the permitted stay, leave before that stay ends. Book the exit on the flight search, and arrange a airport transfer if you need a car to the terminal. After you have exited, a new tourist visa is a new application. Start it on the visa service and follow it on visa tracking. Do not remain in the UAE on the argument that a new application is “in process”.
A refused extension is also a reason to pause hotel changes. Cancel or shorten a booking only after you know the decision, and keep the hotel’s own deadline in mind. You can compare stays on the hotel search once the new dates are real.
What to do with the extra days
An approved extension is extra time in the UAE, not a new holiday plan by itself. If the added days are in Dubai, look at a desert safari, the activities list, or a longer holiday package only after the new last day is printed on the permit. Visitors who came to see family often use the extra time in one emirate. Visitors who came for tourism often add Abu Dhabi or a desert day. Either way, carry the updated visa approval and your passport on day trips.
If the extension covers a weekend you had already planned to fly home, change the ticket only after approval. Airlines charge their own fees. Immigration does not move a flight booking. The travel guides on this site cover visas, Dubai tours, and trip planning if you want to read the related articles while you wait.
How Kite Star Tourism handles the file
Kite Star Tourism is a Dubai travel agency at Office 1609, Musalla Tower, Sharaf DG Metro Exit 4. The visa desk works on tourist and visit visas the company has issued, and it can tell you quickly when a stay cannot be extended and a new visa or an exit is the honest option. Call +971 545484000 or email support@kitestartourism.com. The contact page has the same office details.
Send the passport copy, the current visa approval, the date you entered the UAE, and the date you now want to stay until. Do not send card numbers or one-time passwords by email. The government fee is paid on the ICP or GDRFA channel, or at the authorised centre. Kite Star does not control the officer’s decision and does not promise a same-day approval. The published processing time is about two days, so ask before the final week, not on the final afternoon.
Rules, fees, and eligible nationalities change. The amounts and day limits in this guide are taken from the ICP Visa Extension service and the GDRFA Dubai extension services for tourist visas and for visiting a friend or relative, as published when this page was reviewed on 3 October 2026. Check the live service page, or the sponsor named on your visa, before you pay or before you change a flight.

Checklist before you stay longer
The visa was issued by GDRFA Dubai or by ICP, and you are using that same authority.
The visa type is allowed to be extended. Tourist and relative-visit files have different day caps.
The extra days will not push the total stay past 120 days for tourism, or 180 days for a relative or friend visit.
The sponsor, or the tourism office that issued the visa, has agreed to file.
The passport copy, photo, and original supporting documents are ready.
The application will be paid before the permitted stay ends.
You have an exit plan if the answer is no.
Used in that order, an in-country extension is a normal immigration service, not a loophole. If your visa was issued by Kite Star Tourism, the visa desk can file it from Dubai. If it was not, the sponsor named on the approval is the person who has to start.
Frequently Asked Questions
Often, yes. Eligible tourist and visit visas can be extended inside the UAE if you apply before the permitted stay ends and the visa type allows it. Dubai-issued visas go through GDRFA Dubai. Visas issued through the federal system go through ICP. The sponsor or the tourism office that issued the visa usually files the request.
