Do Children Need a Dubai Visa? Family Visa Guide

Yes. A child needs their own permission to enter Dubai. There is no family tourist visa that places a son or daughter on a parent’s approval. The child’s passport nationality decides whether they need a visa in advance, can use visa on arrival, or can enter without a visa. A baby needs a passport too. GCC citizens, including GCC children, do not need a visa. Everyone else should be checked one person at a time before tickets are locked. The passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry into the UAE. This guide was reviewed on 3 October 2026 from the UAE Government’s visa pages and the ICP service manual.

The short answer parents actually need

Pack one passport per person, including infants. Then ask a second question for each passport: does this nationality need a visa before flying to the UAE? The official answer is published by the UAE Government. GCC citizens do not need a visa. Some other nationalities can get a visa on arrival. Everyone else must apply before travel. Lists change, so the check is the child’s passport, not the parent’s memory of a previous trip.

A parent’s visa does not extend to a child sitting on their lap. Airline check-in treats the infant as a passenger. Dubai immigration treats the infant as a passenger. If the child needs a visa and does not have one, the family can be stopped even when the adults are fully approved.

If the child needs a visa in advance, apply with the adults on the UAE visa page so the dates match. If the trip is close and the nationality is eligible for a faster file, compare that with the express visa service. Do not buy a child ticket first and hope the visa can be added the night before the flight.

Whose passport decides the child’s visa

The rule follows the child, not the parent who booked the holiday. A mother who can enter visa-free can be travelling with a child who holds a different passport and needs a pre-arranged visa. The opposite happens too: a parent needs a tourist visa, and the child is a GCC citizen who does not. Mixed-nationality families should lay the passports in a row and check each one. Guessing from the parent’s status is how families reach the airport with one person short.

The UAE Government’s page “Check if you need a visa to enter the UAE”, updated 13 July 2026, states three groups. GCC citizens do not need a visa. Some nationalities obtain a visa on arrival. Others must apply in advance. It also states that passports must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry, and that visa-on-arrival lists can change. Check with the UAE embassy or the issuer of the visa if a nationality sits on the edge of a list.

Visa on arrival, when it exists for that passport, is still an entry permission for that person. It is not a sticker that covers the whole booking. If the child is eligible, they still present their own passport. If the child is not eligible, they need their own application even if both parents will collect a visa on arrival at the desk.

Infants, toddlers, and teenagers are separate applicants

Age changes the documents you carry. It does not remove the need for the child’s own entry status.

  • Infants need their own passport. A newborn listed only in a parent’s passport is not a travel document for this trip. Apply for the passport first, then the visa if that nationality requires one. Build that time into the holiday. A birth registration is not a passport.

  • Young children are filed the same way as other visitors who need a visa: their own application, their own approval, their own passport at the counter. Carry the birth certificate so the relationship is easy to see, especially when the surname is not the same as the accompanying adult.

  • Teenagers under 18 are still minors for this trip. ICP’s service manual treats children of tourists under 18 as companions of the tourist arrival. That category is exempt from the financial guarantee. Exemption from a guarantee is not exemption from the visa, and it is not a free visa for every month of the year.

There is no separate “kids’ visa” product with a different legal nature. The child receives the same kind of entry permit the trip needs: tourist, visit a relative, or visa on arrival, according to nationality and purpose. The form is filled in their name.

What “exempt from the financial guarantee” does and does not mean

ICP’s user manual, in the section on issuing an entry permit to visit for tourism, says companions of tourist arrivals who are children of tourists under 18 are exempted from the financial guarantee. Read that sentence narrowly. A financial guarantee is a security the sponsor may have to put up for an adult visitor. Removing it for a child under 18 lowers one part of the sponsor’s file. It does not say the child may travel without a visa. It does not say the visa fee is always zero.

The UAE has, in some years, announced a seasonal arrangement for children travelling with parents, limited to dates the government publishes. Those dates are not permanent. A family travelling in October 2026 should not assume a summer offer is still open. Ask for the fee on the file before you pay. Kite Star Tourism quotes the government lines and any service fee separately, and only for the passports on that application.

Adult fees and child fees can differ by visa type and by what the authority is charging that week. Do not copy a price from a forum. The amount that matters is the one on the ICP or GDRFA checkout, or on the written quote for a visa this office is filing.

Documents to have in the cabin bag

Immigration and the airline do not share one checklist, so carry a small set that satisfies both.

  • The child’s passport, valid at least six months from the day you enter the UAE, as the UAE Government requires.

  • The child’s visa approval, if a visa was required before travel. Printed and on the phone. The approval name must match the passport.

  • A birth certificate for each child. This is the practical proof that the adult and the child belong together, especially if the surnames differ. Keep a certified copy if you do not want to hand over the only original.

  • The parents’ passports and, where those parents also need visas, their approvals. If the child is travelling as a companion of a tourist, the accompanying adult’s status is part of the story at the desk.

  • A consent letter when one parent is not on the flight. Many airlines ask for this at check-in, and some home countries require it before they let a child depart. It is wiser to carry a signed letter, with a copy of the absent parent’s passport, than to argue at the counter. If a court has given one parent sole custody, carry that order.

  • Hotel details and the return or onward flight for the same dates as the visa. A child visa that ends three days before the parents’ visa is an avoidable problem.

Put the originals in the cabin bag, not in the checked suitcase. A missing birth certificate is a check-in problem, not a baggage-claim problem.

One parent, a guardian, or a school group

Dubai immigration is looking for a lawful entry. The airline is looking for authority to carry a child. Both can refuse the trip for different reasons.

When both parents are on the booking, the birth certificate is usually enough to show the relationship. When one parent travels, take the consent of the other parent unless you already have a custody document that makes consent unnecessary. When neither parent travels, the accompanying adult should have a consent from the parents or legal guardians, plus the birth certificate, and the airline’s unaccompanied-minor or accompanied-minor rules must be read before the ticket is issued. Age cut-offs for unaccompanied minors are set by the airline, not by this article. Confirm them with the carrier.

A school trip or a grandparent’s holiday uses the same visa logic. Each child who needs a visa gets an application. The group leader’s visa does not cover the class. If Kite Star is filing the visas, send one clear list: each child’s name as in the passport, date of birth, passport number, and the adult who will stand with that child at immigration.

How a family application is filed

Tourist visas for people who cannot get visa on arrival or visa-free entry are applied for through ICP, through GDRFA Dubai, or through an airline, hotel, or licensed travel agent. The UAE Government says that directly. A family does not lodge one form. You lodge one application per person, usually in the same batch so the sponsor, the entry window, and the length of stay match.

  1. Check every passport against the current UAE eligibility list. Note who is visa-free, who may get visa on arrival, and who must apply.

  2. Choose the same stay for the whole family unless someone is genuinely leaving earlier. A 30-day visa and a 60-day visa in one family is allowed, but only if you mean it.

  • Apply for every person who needs a visa, children included, before you pay for non-refundable hotels. Use the visa application if Kite Star is the sponsor.

  • Track each file on visa tracking. One approval email does not mean the child’s file is approved.

  • Travel with the approvals and the birth certificates. At Dubai, each passport is scanned on its own.

  • If the departure date is close, say so at the start. Express handling is a faster queue for eligible files. It is not a way to skip a nationality that must be pre-approved, and it is not a substitute for a missing passport. The express visa page explains the urgent option. Ordinary files should still be started several days before the flight, longer if a child’s passport is not issued yet.

Visa on arrival is not a family shortcut

Parents sometimes hear that “our country gets visa on arrival” and book four seats. That is safe only when every passport in the booking is on that list. A cousin added at the last minute, or a child who renewed into a different passport, can fall outside it.

Visa on arrival is granted at the airport to the person who qualifies. It can still involve a fee. It can be refused if the passport is short, the return plan is unclear, or the officer is not satisfied. It is a poor plan for a child whose nationality is not on the list. Pre-arrange that child’s visa, then travel.

GCC citizens, including children, are the group the UAE Government names as not needing a visa. A GCC child still travels on their own passport. They do not borrow a parent’s identity card as a travel document for immigration.

Matching dates, hotels, and the flight home

File the children’s visas for the same entry window as the parents. If the parents are approved from 10 December and the child is approved from 12 December, the family cannot fly on the 10th. Read the “enter by” date and the number of days of stay on each approval. They are not always identical just because you applied together.

Book the hotel in a name that matches an adult on the visa, and keep the confirmation with the children’s papers. Book flights only when you know the passports exist. Changing a misspelled child name after ticketing is an airline charge, and a visa printed from the wrong spelling does not match the passport.

If you will move between the airport and the hotel with car seats and luggage, arrange the transfer for the real number of people, including infants. A car booked for two adults is the wrong car for two adults and three children.

Staying longer than the original family visa

An extension, if the visa type allows one, is also per person. A parent’s extension does not lengthen a child’s stay. Tourist and visit permits are generally capped at 120 days in total, and a visit to a relative or friend at 180 days in total, subject to the issuing authority. The detail is in How to Extend Your UAE Visit Visa Without Leaving the Country. Apply for every family member who will remain, before the first person’s stay ends. A child whose visa expires while the parents are extended is not “covered”.

Overstay fines are charged per person. Leaving one child’s file until the last afternoon is how a family pays more than one fine on the way out. If an extension is refused, leave before the permitted stay ends.

What to do with the children once the visas are approved

Dubai is straightforward with children when the paperwork is finished before you fly. After the approvals are in hand, choose activities that match the children’s ages rather than adding them to a booking you cannot change. The activities list and a desert safari should be checked for minimum ages and for whether infants are allowed in that vehicle. A holiday package is easier to time when the visa dates are already known.

Carry the children’s passports on day trips outside the hotel. A copy on a phone is useful. The original is what a checkpoint can ask to see. The travel guides on this site cover visas, Dubai planning, and related trips if you want to read them while the applications are in progress.

How Kite Star files a family

Kite Star Tourism is a Dubai travel agency at Office 1609, Musalla Tower, Sharaf DG Metro Exit 4. The visa desk files a separate application for each person who needs a visa, children and infants included, and keeps the travel dates aligned. Call +971 545484000 or email support@kitestartourism.com. The contact page has the same office details.

Send a passport copy for every traveller, a photo if the visa type asks for one, and the birth certificate for each child. Say who is travelling with the child. Do not send card numbers or one-time passwords by email. Government fees are paid on the official channel or as quoted on the file. Kite Star does not control the officer’s decision and does not promise that a child of a visa-free parent is visa-free.

Nationality lists, fees, and seasonal child offers change. This page uses the UAE Government’s visa check, updated 13 July 2026, the government tourist-visa page, and the ICP manual note that tourist children under 18 are exempt from the financial guarantee. It was reviewed on 3 October 2026. Check the live list, or ask the sponsor named on the application, before you pay or before you ticket the children.

Family checklist before you pay for the flights

    • Every child, including a baby, has their own passport.

    • Each passport is valid for at least six months from the day you will enter the UAE.

    • Each nationality has been checked. A parent’s visa-free or visa-on-arrival status has not been copied onto a child with a different passport.

    • Anyone who needs a visa has their own application, including infants.

    • Birth certificates are in the cabin bag. A consent letter is included if one parent is not travelling.

    • The children’s visas cover the same dates as the parents’ visas and the flights.

    • You know the fee for each file. A guarantee exemption for children under 18 is not the same as a free visa.

Checked in that order, a family Dubai trip is a set of individual entry permissions that happen to be for people travelling together. If Kite Star Tourism is filing the visas, send every passport at the same time. If a child does not need a visa, you will be told that from the passport, not from the hotel booking.

    Frequently Asked Questions

If that child’s nationality needs a visa, yes. There is no family tourist visa that adds a child to a parent’s approval. GCC citizen children do not need a visa. Some other nationalities can use visa on arrival. Everyone else must apply before travel. The check is the child’s passport.
